Glyde v Hunterstown

4/13/2018

Glyde 0-5 Hunterstown 3-10

Glyde made an unhappy return to Division 2 football suffering a 14 point defeat to a well tuned Hunterstown outfit. 3 first half goals, two from Glen Matthews who finished with a total of 2-6, killed off the game and the result was never seriously in doubt. It was a game that never suited the Glyde style of play as they struggled on the heavy ground to attack down the flanks and had difficulty gaining possession around the middle from restarts. Hunterstown were physically much stronger in most areas and could possibly have won by more, but chose to empty their bench in the

2nd half.

Glyde never created a goal chance but will rue 7 wides that could have made it more competitive. All Glydes scores came from Brian Duffy, 3, and Trevor O'Brien, 2, four of the points coming from frees.

Glyde Rangers GFC 0-14 Glen Emmets 1-12

Unfortunately Our Lads came home without the Christy Bellew Cup but did us proud all year. It was their only defeat all season and only by the smallest of margins. The year ends with 2 trophies, still a good year.

Glyde 2-11 Roche 1-7

Picture
Glyde Rangers have qualified for the 2017 Junior Championship Final after a comprehensive victory over Roche Emmets in Haggardstown. With a very strong wind hampering quality football being played, Glyde out fought and out thought the only team to hold them to a draw this year.

Playing with the wind in the first half Glyde took an early lead from Full forward Brian Duffy after only a minute. They struggled to score however in the opening half as the wind swirled and caused havoc with everyone's accuracy.

Gavin Duffy added a second after 6 minutes after Roche had equalised and added further points from Mark O'Brien, Aaron Devlin, Dion Conlon and 2 from Trevor O'Brien to leave the score 0-7 to 0-2 at half time. With such a strong wind, Glyde might have hoped for more but their brilliant second half performance was the real key.

Roche started the second half with venom but seemed unable to convert. Cein Sheridan was like a rock in full back but it was the Veteran goalie filling in, Anthony Nulty, who really brought it together. During a massive goal mouth scramble after 6 minutes, Nulty saved a wicked shot and then had the presence to get straight up and flick the ball out to Conor McCullough. Glyde broke straight up the pitch and Niall Sharkey tore the Roche defence with a trademark burst and laid it off for Gavin Duffy to blast home. Dion Conlon added a second goal 3 minutes later following another Sharkey run and good work by Gavin Duffy to find Conlon. The game seems as good as won at this stage but a second yellow for Mark O'Brien 4 minutes later meant Glyde couldn't be too comfortable. Gavin Duffy now filled the gap in defence and with Conor Sheridan tracking back to great effect from the no 11 position, Glyde sorted themselves out and kept Roche at bay.

With Trevor adding 3 lovely second half free kicks and Ciaran Sheridan landing a monster free kick, they had enough to tick the score board over and had the presence to maintain possession and not let Roche back in. Even when Fiachra Sheridan pulled his man down after 23 minutes and Barry O'Hare netted the resultant penalty, Glyde still held their nerve as Gerard Farrell and Aaron Devlin helped shore up a determined defence.

A Championship decider awaits against either Dunleer or Glen Emmets, who drew earlier, in 2 weeks and a near perfect season is looking a very real possibility.
Glyde Anthony Nulty, Conor Mcullough, Cein Sheridan, Gerard Farrell, Aaron Devlin(0-1), Mark O'Brien(0-1), Fiachra Sheridan, Ciaran Sheridan(0-1), David Devanney, Dion Conlon(1-1), Conor Sheridan, Niall Sharkey, Trevor O'Brien(0-5), Brian Duffy(0-1), Gavin Duffy(1-1) Subs used Alan Brennan, Peter Duffy, Barry Sharkey.

Glyde v Naomh Malachis

Glyde 2-10 Naomh Malachis 1-7

It was a scene closer to John Carpenters Horror Film "The Fog";

but it finished with a happy ending for Glyde as they took home the Dixon Cup for the 2nd time in three years and bounce straight back to Division 2 League Football.

The Horrible conditions led to an error filled encounter but Trevor O’Brien scored a couple of early frees to settle some Glyde nerves. Trevor then flicked in a goal after 14 minutes and it seemed Glyde might settle and kick on.

The Mals had other ideas however, and kept plugging away, especially through Padraig Moley in Midfield who kicked 3 impressive long range points.

With Brian Duffy also contributing some key scores Glyde kept their noses in front and led by 4 at half time. Mark O’Brien was controlling the game from Centre Back and as Glyde through Duffy and O’Brien were picking up scores, again it looked like Glyde were cruising.
However Jamie Kelly took advantage of a mix up in the Glyde Full Back line on 40 minutes to poke the ball past David Brennan and bring the game within 2 points.

Glyde responded quickly though and when Niall Sharkey took a 45, the low kick managed to deceive everyone and shot into the Mals net. The game was pretty much over at that stage as Glyde added on a couple more scores. Glyde could have iced the cake late on when Dion Conlon shot wide just before the final whistle, after a move that worked up the pitch from the Full Back line.It was to be Glydes night and Des Halpenny presented the Trophy to Glyde Captain Trevor O’Brien shortly after the final whistle.

Niall Sharkey, Conor McCullough and Aaron Devlin impressed for the Tallanstown outfit as well as their impressive Full Forward line of O’Brien, Brian and Gavin Duffy.

Glyde Rangers: David Brennan; Fiachra Sheridan, Gerard Farrell, Peter Duffy; Aaron Devlin, Mark O’Brien, Conor McCullough; Ciarán Sheridan, Dion Conlon (0-1); Niall Sharkey (1-0), Conor Sheridan, Alan Brennan; Trevor O’Brien (1-4), Brian Duffy (0-4), Gavin Duffy Subs Used Jason Dullaghan, Barry Sharkey, Barry Brennan, Niall Bird.

Glyde 1-11 St Kevin's 1-8

Glyde continued their unbeaten run this year with a battling performance against a resolute Kevin's side and have now taken a 2 point lead at the top of the table. Brian Duffy's 2nd half 1-5 was just about enough to see a nervy Glyde team home.

Glyde started poorly despite taking the lead through Barry Sharkey after 6 minutes but Kevins struck back with a well worked goal from Patrick Clarke just 4 minutes later after Seanie Crosbie had levelled. Indeed if Kevin's had not kicked eight 1st half wides including another goal chance, the result could have proved much different. As it was, Glyde struggled to cope with the Kevin's mass defence and did not seem able to execute their own sweeper system correctly. They did convert the next 3 scores through Sharkey again and 2 from the as usual excellent Trevor O'Brien. However Cein Callan for Kevin's converted 2 free kicks to keep their noses in front 1-3 to 0-4 at half time.

Lee Crosbie in midfield for Kevin's looked to continue his dominance but the 2nd half performance of Glydes Dion Conlon proved crucial and effectively starved the Kevin's attack of any ball. Brian Duffy scored 2 points on the trot at the start of the half and another beauty from O'Brien put Glyde in the lead for the first time. Callan equalised after 5 minutes before Duffy got his goal straight after, and what a goal it was. It started in the Glyde defence and made its way through a number of hands before Conor Sheridan found O'Brien in space in the left corner and he worked the ball into the middle where Duffy turned and rifled the ball home, busting the Kevins net in the process.

O'Brien, Duffy and Niall Sharkey added points and Glyde looked set to rack up a big score. But again Kevin's came back and points by Karl Martin and Aaron Roche gave them momentum. Duffy scored Glydes last score of the game with still 14 minutes left but Kevin's could only add another 2 points through Crosbie and Callan and Glyde fought hard in their own half to secure the win.
Glyde had some good performances from David Brennan and Aaron Devlin whilst Kevin's Conor McCullough and Andrew Campbell also played well.

Louth Junior Championship Round 2

Glyde Rangers 1-15 Naomh Malachi 1-6

A goal and a point within a minute from Glydes corner forward Gavin Duffy in the 2nd half helped Glyde to a 9 point win in a tempestuous championship match in Louth Village. With both teams finishing the game with 14 men and a number of injuries on both sides, both teams will hope for an extended break before their next games.
Glyde were well on top throughout the game and but for their 13 wides, the difference could have been much, much larger. Glyde had scored 6 points before Malachis scored their first after 19 minutes. However an injury to Key midfielder David Devanney had caused a reshuffle and they struggled to gain a decisive blow. Niall Sharkey was a constant thorn in the Malachis defence with his blistering breaks but also showed his long range prowess from long range free kicks with an excellent 45 and free kick from the ground. With Trevor O'Brien and Alan Brennan also converting from play Glyde seemed to have the game in hand. However a black card on 20 minutes following an earlier Yellow, meant Conor Sheridan could not be replaced. This caused Malachis to block up the middle third with their extra man but bizarrely, they did not employ a sweeper meaning the Glyde 2 man full forward line were left man on man.

With further points from Brian Duffy and Sharkey again, Glyde were 10 points to 2 ahead at half time. The second half suffered from the centerfield swarm and both teams struggled to even create chances. However after 12 minutes, Gavin Duffy took advantage of the one on one, and from long balls in from Ciaran Sheridan, converted his superb goal and point to really finish off the contest. Duffy had to go off injured shortly after but things got worse for Malachis when Peter McShane was sent off for a rash challenge on Alan Brennan and despite converting a penalty on 19 minutes following a mix up in the Glyde penalty area, the game was out of their reach. O'Brien and Gavin Duffy replied to the goal with points and even though Malachis scored 2 points through Pierce Caherty and Mark Megan, Glydes John Myles scored a nice 30 metre point in injury time to complete the scoring.
The Glyde defence were never seriously tested but Mark O'Brien and Conor McCullagh kept everything at bay and in attack Aaron Devlin and Barry Sharkey supported the effort strongly.

Glyde Rangers 5-17 St Nicholas 0-3

Picture

Glyde scored a facile winning start to the 2017 Junior Championship beating St Nicholas by 29 points in an extremely lopsided game.

Indeed the Nicks did not even score in the 2nd half in a game that Trevor O'Brien scored 2-7, neither starting goalie finished between the sticks and Glyde goalie, David Brennan, even scored a point after his move outfield.

All of St Nicholas points came from free kicks through forward Philip Kirwan and despite the tremendous score Glyde still managed 13 wides.
Glyde played a different formation to their normal league set up with Niall Sharkey in the Full Forward line with Trevor and he finished with 1-6, the other goals scored by Brian Duffy and Barry Brennan. Glyde won in every single corner of the pitch but will be mindful of the fact that they will have sterner tests ahead. Dion Conlon, Alan Brennan, Cein Sheridan, Conor Sheridan and Gavin Duffy all shone for the winners.
