Louth Junior Championship Round 2

Glyde Rangers 1-15 Naomh Malachi 1-6

A goal and a point within a minute from Glydes corner forward Gavin Duffy in the 2nd half helped Glyde to a 9 point win in a tempestuous championship match in Louth Village. With both teams finishing the game with 14 men and a number of injuries on both sides, both teams will hope for an extended break before their next games.
Glyde were well on top throughout the game and but for their 13 wides, the difference could have been much, much larger. Glyde had scored 6 points before Malachis scored their first after 19 minutes. However an injury to Key midfielder David Devanney had caused a reshuffle and they struggled to gain a decisive blow. Niall Sharkey was a constant thorn in the Malachis defence with his blistering breaks but also showed his long range prowess from long range free kicks with an excellent 45 and free kick from the ground. With Trevor O'Brien and Alan Brennan also converting from play Glyde seemed to have the game in hand. However a black card on 20 minutes following an earlier Yellow, meant Conor Sheridan could not be replaced. This caused Malachis to block up the middle third with their extra man but bizarrely, they did not employ a sweeper meaning the Glyde 2 man full forward line were left man on man.

With further points from Brian Duffy and Sharkey again, Glyde were 10 points to 2 ahead at half time. The second half suffered from the centerfield swarm and both teams struggled to even create chances. However after 12 minutes, Gavin Duffy took advantage of the one on one, and from long balls in from Ciaran Sheridan, converted his superb goal and point to really finish off the contest. Duffy had to go off injured shortly after but things got worse for Malachis when Peter McShane was sent off for a rash challenge on Alan Brennan and despite converting a penalty on 19 minutes following a mix up in the Glyde penalty area, the game was out of their reach. O'Brien and Gavin Duffy replied to the goal with points and even though Malachis scored 2 points through Pierce Caherty and Mark Megan, Glydes John Myles scored a nice 30 metre point in injury time to complete the scoring.
The Glyde defence were never seriously tested but Mark O'Brien and Conor McCullagh kept everything at bay and in attack Aaron Devlin and Barry Sharkey supported the effort strongly.

Glyde Rangers 5-17 St Nicholas 0-3

Picture

Glyde scored a facile winning start to the 2017 Junior Championship beating St Nicholas by 29 points in an extremely lopsided game.

Indeed the Nicks did not even score in the 2nd half in a game that Trevor O'Brien scored 2-7, neither starting goalie finished between the sticks and Glyde goalie, David Brennan, even scored a point after his move outfield.

All of St Nicholas points came from free kicks through forward Philip Kirwan and despite the tremendous score Glyde still managed 13 wides.
Glyde played a different formation to their normal league set up with Niall Sharkey in the Full Forward line with Trevor and he finished with 1-6, the other goals scored by Brian Duffy and Barry Brennan. Glyde won in every single corner of the pitch but will be mindful of the fact that they will have sterner tests ahead. Dion Conlon, Alan Brennan, Cein Sheridan, Conor Sheridan and Gavin Duffy all shone for the winners.
