Glyde 2-10 Naomh Malachis 1-7
It was a scene closer to John Carpenters Horror Film "The Fog";
but it finished with a happy ending for Glyde as they took home the Dixon Cup for the 2nd time in three years and bounce straight back to Division 2 League Football.
| The Horrible conditions led to an error filled encounter but Trevor O’Brien scored a couple of early frees to settle some Glyde nerves. Trevor then flicked in a goal after 14 minutes and it seemed Glyde might settle and kick on. The Mals had other ideas however, and kept plugging away, especially through Padraig Moley in Midfield who kicked 3 impressive long range points. With Brian Duffy also contributing some key scores Glyde kept their noses in front and led by 4 at half time. Mark O’Brien was controlling the game from Centre Back and as Glyde through Duffy and O’Brien were picking up scores, again it looked like Glyde were cruising. |
However Jamie Kelly took advantage of a mix up in the Glyde Full Back line on 40 minutes to poke the ball past David Brennan and bring the game within 2 points.

Glyde responded quickly though and when Niall Sharkey took a 45, the low kick managed to deceive everyone and shot into the Mals net. The game was pretty much over at that stage as Glyde added on a couple more scores. Glyde could have iced the cake late on when Dion Conlon shot wide just before the final whistle, after a move that worked up the pitch from the Full Back line.It was to be Glydes night and Des Halpenny presented the Trophy to Glyde Captain Trevor O’Brien shortly after the final whistle.
